Accelerate. Optimise.

Despite AI’s promise, many organisations struggle with its implementation beyond basic productivity initiatives such as ChatGPT and Copilot. However, AI cannot only be treated as a “plug-and-play” technology.

To harness the potential of AI, organisations need to align company culture and strategy to an AI-powered operating model. In most cases, this requires an organisational shift from siloed work to agile and interdisciplinary collaboration. Effective AI deployment requires cross-functional teams that integrate customer, operational and intelligence expertise. Similarly, decisions must be made about the degree of decentralisation of decision capabilities and data governance.

Most importantly, organisations need to build and continuously evolve internal AI capacity. AI is not a utility that can be outsourced. Many organisations learned this the hard way when they outsourced technology capabilities to global consulting and IT organisations. These organisations became dependent on the consulting companies and IT services companies as they pursued short-term cost reductions to deliver shareholder returns. AI can deliver significant cost reductions and shareholder returns, but it must be managed as a Differentiating Capability underpinned by internal capacity that ensures a continued sovereign, adaptive and anti-fragile ability to deliver great customer experiences via products and services that performs better that the competition.

Successful acceleration and optimisation of AI capabilities requires an organisational shift from experience (including “gut-feel”) and seniority-driven decision making to data-informed decisions. This requires moving away from traditional hierarchical and bureaucratic structures to agile constructs centred on adopting a test-and-learn approach, valuing quick iterations and user feedback to refine AI solutions in a rapid evolution of products, services and distribution channels.
